Charit Creek Lodge, located in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation area, is a remote, rustic bunkhouse style lodge nestled in a valley. It is only accessible by foot -- the shortest trail is .8 miles over a 500ft descent from the parking lot. You can also opt for a longer more scenic hike if you wish. I went to Charit Creek back in March with the CAVG meetup group and we had a super time (although a bit rainy) so I wanted to plan a return trip.
You can read more details about it at their website here. I am setting up the 'hostel' option which will provide us access to use the kitchen. We will work to plan group dinners but you will need to bring your own food for breakfast/lunch. There is potable water at Charit Creek along with flush toilets and shower house. There is NO electricity in the lodge but plenty of kerosene lamps. The bunks have a pad on them along with a flat sheet and (too flat for me) pillow. Some of the bunks are doubles so some may need to slumber next to each other on the same bunk. You will need sleeping bag, etc. but we will be able to use the cookware/dishes at Charit Creek.
I have selected this weekend hoping we will see some beautiful fall foliage while we do some great dayhikes. The area is so scenic so remember to pack your cameras!
Charit Creek requires payment in advance so you must RSVP to this event by Sunday 9/6 and submit your money by Tuesday, 9/15. The cost for both nights will be $47 total per person. I will watch the posting and will send an email with exact payment details to those who sign up. It's about a 5 hour drive from Cincinnati --- we will set up a carpool site with two groups --- one leaving Friday morning and one leaving Friday after work.
“ Had a great time exploring a new area. The people, as usual, made it wonderful. Thanks to my car riding buddies for the good conversation. And special kudos to our fearless leader, Kelly, for doing a terrific job organizing & keeping us in line. ”
“ Loved it! Great hiking, fun people. Charit is such a peaceful and beautiful area with a preview of the color changes to come! Love the foilage, rocks, cliffs, sandstone arches, and on and on...... Thanks Kelly! ”
“ What a great group of people. Thanks to all for helping me forget about the "real world" for a few days. I enjoyed meeting so many new people and challenging my legs. You should see my bruises! Thanks again to Kelly for her taking a chance to book a place for us. ”
“ Excellent weekend in the woods with a great group! Angel Falls was worth the trip despite the brief pop-up shower on Friday afternoon. Saturday cooperated without a single drop of rain and provided ideal hiking temps (thank you Mother Nature) and we checked out the Twin Arches, Slave Falls and Needle Arch completing an 8 mile hike. Group meal Sat night -- lots of laughs, yummy food and Psychopath's DELISHHHH brownies! :> Part of us went up to Yahoo Falls on Sunday to check out the tallest falls in KY -- short loop but awesome scenery! Charit is such a serene place tucked away from the world --- I'd go back anytime. Extra thanks again to my awesome carpool driver! ”
“ Nice lodge nestled in a valley, friendly staff, great access to hiking trails.
A little strange being there as a "homesteader" while others who paid more were fed and more catered to by the staff. Still a great place to visit and use as a basecamp to explore the region. ”
“ Kelly was a great organizer. Fun group, good trails, bunk house and hostel option at Charit Creek were great, weather held for us... I'd go back next year. ”
