For those of you who wanted to participate in my last introductory hike but couldn't, this is for you (and anyone else who wants to tag along).

Over 1800 members on this group, but how many of you have actually gone on a hike? Time to get off your duffs and come out for a four to five mile easy hike at the natural areas at Miami University. The event will start with a talk about hiking (gear, water, etc.) and then fellow member Beth (who knows the area) will guide us along the trail. Anyone who wants to have a Q&A session about hiking can tug on my ear while walking and I will be happy to share info. The talk and hike are geared towards new hikers.

Trail map can be found here.

Wear sturdy shoes (boots would probably be a good idea, but at the very least good walking shoes), wear layers for warmth if it turns into a cool day, and bring WATER, enough to last you 2-3 hours (I suggest at least 50 ounces).

I am hoping that the author of 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Cincinnati (Tammy York, another fellow member) will be able to join us to talk a bit about her book. I recommend it for those getting into hiking and are looking for places to visit that are fairly local to Cincinnati.

Carpool - Meet between 9:45 and 10:00 am near the Hobby Lobby on Colerain (Exit 33 on I-275). We will leave at 10:00 am sharp, so please do not be late. The Hobby Lobby is north of the interstate, and is in the same area as Walmart. There is a Wendy's and Burger King out front of the plaza that Hobby Lobby is located. We'll head north on US 27 into Oxford, then east on Ohio 73 to the parking area. I highly suggest meeting at the carpool to reduce the number of cars in the natural areas parking lot. Here are the directions from the carpool from Hobby Lobby.

Post hike grub is up to you, but I plan on stopping at 45 East Bar and Grill in downtown Oxford. Obviously we all cannot go to one place, so search about accordingly.

My cell - [masked]

So c'mon, take a hike!

Simmie, were you on the same hike as everyone else? (see other comments) We did NOT start late...the talk was part of the event, meaning that the talk (which actually started EARLY) was included in the 11am start time. Secondarily, there were people positioned within each group who knew where they were going (and I was in the rear 75% of the hike), so stop and wait when you are confused. There were maps available. And, we averaged less than 2.5 miles per hour (24 minutes per mile).

Kiwi and I are ready to show you the Miami Natural Areas on Sunday. Above is a link to the trail map of the area. This might give you an idea of the parking area and some landmarks if you are unsure about it. We will be hiking a loop that starts from the parking lot on Rt 73 and includes Bachelor Preserve, Reinhart Preserve, and possibly Bachelor Preserve Pine Loop.

Karen - If you head up 127 or 177 turn left (west) on Ohio 73. Stay on 73 until you come to a low valley before climbing into Oxford. The parking lot will be on your right. If you pass the stables you've gone a bit too far.

I'd really like to come to this hike. I live in Fairfield Twp so going all the way over to Colerain is a bit in the opposite direction. Can someone give me directions about where to meet in Oxford?

Sorry, Kathy, I should have mentioned that this IS a dog-friendly hike. Dogs are required to be on leashes (Miami's rule). Kiwi the hiking wonder dog will be there (Beth's wonderful canine).

Kaiyu - There is no specific street address for the parking lot. It is east of Oxford on Ohio 73, past the stables, on the north side of 73.

    •  Had a great time and the weather was fantastic. Enjoyed meeting so many people with the same interest in hiking and comparing experiences and different trails. The hiking 101 talk was very informative with suggestions on boots, clothing, and general tips on hiking. I've hiked for some time but you always learn something. Enjoyed meeting for lunch afterwards and talking with members I didn't meet during the day's hike. Looking forward to another event.
    •  Thanks Beth & Darryl, A beautiful day to hike - big turnout. Nice to meet some new people. Brunch at Stella's was yummy!
    •  What an absolutely beautiful day for a hike!
    •  What a beautiful day for a hike! Met some nice peole and enjoyed the great fall weather!
    •  Great weather and great company! Thanks to Darryl and Beth.
    •  Darryl did a good job of talking about hiking gear, etc. Problems - we started almost 30 minutes late. That was a problem and I recall reading that we were going to leave on time. The group was too large not to have someone in the sweep position. Leaving anyone behind to figure out which trail was taken next was not a good thing. Some of us hike in groups for , not only the social aspect, but for safety in numbers. When you're all alone on an unfamiliar trail in the woods, it's not the best situation. The pace should be explained not in terms of "moderate" (one person's moderate is not another's) but in terms of how many minutes per mile, i.e., this one was probably 12 minutes per mile.

The area was beautiful and the trail had some nice challenging areas. I liked the creek and how the trail corssed it or followed it.
    •  Nice turnout, great location for this level of hike, lots of friendly newcomers--trails were well marked, not too much elevation change, etc. My only negative is I had to leave early and did not get to complete the full hike!

A great day and place to hike in and enjoyed meeting some new people and seeing some of the regulars. And I did not fall down once! Many thanks to Darryl and Beth.
    •  It was a great hike..

This was a very nice hike in a beautiful area.
    • Dave (+1 guest)
The group was too large. It needed to be broken down into at least three subgroups.

We had a great time for our first hike with the TRiState Hikers--nice weather-nice people-nice hiking. We thought the hike became sparse as some hikers wern't sure where the others were etc. and consequently took some wrong turns. The area was rather small and we suppose everyone made it back. For hiking 101 maybe there shouo\ld be more guides or fewer hikers
