Come Hike the Hill!

Join us for a day of winter hiking at Fort Hill State Memorial. The hike will use portions of the Fort, Deer, and Gorge Trails and encompass about five to six miles of hiking along this beautiful section of the Buckeye Trail. We will see 2,000 year old Hopewell earthworks, rock outcroppings, and some small arches. There will be two steep hills to tackle (400 and 300 feet respectively), and the Gorge Trail can be slippery at times, so be certain to wear sturdy hiking boots (and maybe bring trekking poles). Layers are a must and bring water as winter hiking actually can dehydrate you faster than summer hiking. The hike will start at 11:15 and should take two to three hours. The hike will occur unless there are severe weather conditions that would keep us from driving to Fort Hill.

There is a vault (pit) toilet on site (VERY COLD), and the Arc of Appalachia folks (who now manage Fort Hill) will have the museum open for us when we arrive (but no inside toilet).

Weather forecast is calling for some cold and windy conditions. Wear three thinner layers. A hat and gloves are recommended.

Carpool - Meet at the Eastgate Meijers between 9:15 and 9:30. The carpool will leave at 9:30 a.m. sharp so please do not be late (late people will be left behind). The drive to Fort Hill from the carpool site will take a little over an hour. The carpool address is 888 Eastgate North Road. From I-275 take the Eastgate exit (Ohio 32) east about one mile, the Meijers will be on the left.

This was, perhaps, a fitting farewell to the Former Assistant Organizer, Darryl S (better known as Renegade). The weather was crisp but the sky was bright, and he expertly led a crew of varied skill and experience up steep hills, through scenic gorges, and along frozen creeks. Some say Renegade hiked too fast for this group, some say he talked too brash, some say he drank too much. Some say he quit in disgust, some say he was banished. Well, Renegade, whatever trails you're hiking now, good luck and godspeed.

Super hike. Cold day, but that first hill really warms you up fast! The overlooks of the partially frozen river were well worth the trip. Almost perfect view of the keyhole. Great pick Darryl!
    •  I really enjoyed being introduced to Fort Hill State Memorial. It was an interesting and beautiful hike. Darryl knew a lot about the area and shared that info, making the hike even more enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed meeting Bob, Robert, Don, Darryl and Sierra. Cool, no make that cold, day!
    •  It was a surprisingly nice day for a winter hike. There was a good mix of strenuous and easy hiking.
    •  Very cold, but a fine day once we got going. The park is beautiful, a real challenge on the hills. Thanks to all the patient hikers who let me tag along!
    •  Challenging hills :-) Great views and as always, great people to enjoy it with!
    •  COLD weather and warm, friendly people made for a great time!
    •  ......love Fort Hill. Had a great day hiking. It was beautiful when I went in the Fall and the Winter was great too. Darryl hikes rock. Don thanks for posting pics.
    •  My second "invigorating" hike of 2010! Enjoyed chatting with Catherine, Peggy, Robert and Chris. The Gorge trail was spectacular today. Many thanks to Darryl for organizing the last 2 days of outstanding hiking adventures.
