I feel like I am watching my stocks by watching the attendance numbers swing wildly in the last few hours. The hike is still on! Weather looks to be cold so dress warmly. Wind chills will be in the single digits so ensure you have face protection and exposed skin is covered! We will at least walk the airport grounds and if it gets too cold on the trail, we'll cut it short and head back to the terminal for a warm lunch. I will sponsor another trip to Lunken in a month or two for those who did not have a chance to go this time.
Come and enjoy a moderate-paced five mile walk around the paved trail that surrounds Lunken Airport in the East End of Cincinnati. The group will meet and start at the Lunken Airport Terminal. There is free parking on the south and west sides of the terminal. We will be met by the curator of the Lunken Airport History Museum who will give us a short historical tour of the Terminal Building and a short talk on the history of the airport. It is truly a fascinating place. We will then walk eastward on the trail and throw in a little more area history during the walk. Lunken Airport occupies the site of the 1788 pioneer settlement of Columbia. It was one of the first three settlements in the Cincinnati area that included Columbia, Losantiville (later named Cincinnati), and North Bend. Near the end of the walk, we will stop and visit the remains of the Columbia Pioneer cemetery which is almost across the street from the Lunken Airport Terminal. Plan for at least two and a half hours of walking on flat and paved surfaces. Winds may also be a factor so dress warm. More information will be posted as the date draws nearer.
Here is a web site about Lunken Airport. Notice in the aerial photo of the airport, the curved, brown line in the infield between the runways. That is the original Little Miami River bed. The river was rerouted to the east of the airport to allow construction of the long runway.

And what if I told you that a WW II era bomber full of 2000 reptiles and alligators crashed at Lunken? Would you believe me?

Lunken Airport has many other interesting stories.
And of course, the legal waiver.

Larry,
Looks like I'm still down as a yes although I did change my RSVP to a no since I'm not feeling well. About that jacket...I guess it will just have to wait. Thanks! Catherine
Hi Scott. What a small world regarding your Dad's involvement with the reptile incident. The curator at Lunken would like to discuss that incident with you. I look forward to meeting you at Lunken.
My father was the Air Traffic Controller who worked the B25 with the reptiles. I remember him coming home and telling us about it that night. I have his scrapbook that contains the Letter of Commendation about the event.
