Come out and stretch your legs by moonlight this Friday! The January full moon will be the closest and therefore, the largest of 2010. If we think positive thoughts, we will be sure to see it!

Highland Cemetery has graciously agreed to host us at their location for this moderate full moon hike. They only request that we stay on the paved roads for this walk and not venture into their wooded area. The paved trails seem to work well on night hikes so everyone is sure of their footing along the journey. We will walk at a moderate pace throughout the cemetery for approximately 3 miles. There are some good hills so be prepared for some decent cardio.

We are permitted to park right by the office just inside the front gates. The parking is limited so carpooling is encouraged. Please be sure to dress for cold weather and bring your water for hydration (yes, you still need water for cold weather hiking). Sorry but dogs are not permitted inside the cemetery so Fido will have to sit this one out.

We can take a post-hike poll and see if anyone is interested in some libations and grub. Shimmer's tavern is very close by and would fit the bill.

So in each orbit, the moon reaches this closest point to us, called perigee. Once or twice a year, perigee coincides with a full moon, as it will tonight, making the moon bigger and brighter than any other full moons during the year. Tonight it will be about 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than lesser full Moons of the year, according to Spaceweather.com. As a bonus, Mars will be just to the left of the moon tonight. Look for the reddish, star-like object. Full moon craziness

Tonight's full moon will be the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. It offers anyone with clear skies an opportunity to identify easy-to-see features on the moon. This being the first full moon of 2010, it is also known as the wolf moon, a moniker dating back to Native American culture and the notion that hungry wolves howled at the full moon on cold winter nights.

The walk was nice, the other people was fun, and Kelly did a great job as usual. Her hikes are always awesome and fun to go on. I can't wait for the next one. Let's go Kelly!!! Rah Rah Rah!!!
    •  Obviously, started out a little on the cool side. Got to see a couple familiar faces again, and meet some new folks. Eventually got warm enough to feel my fingers again! Also had the pleasure of excellent compay while on the hike. Thanks for a fun evening, wish it would have been a little longer.
    •  Kelly just has a knack for making the hikes fun. Had a good brisk walk.
    •  The moon was shy, but we still had an enjoyable hike around the cemetery. A great way to kick off the weekend.
    •  No moon sightings on this cold cloudy evening. Good thing the company made up for it! Thanks to all those that braved the cold to get in 3 miles.

Nice hike, but the moon wasn't out :( Nobody's fault, though.
